We recently bought this "spy scope" at a vendor's table at a school conference. It was listed for $27.00 on the box and actually sold for $23.00. I would not call it a spy scope as such but rather resembles a minolcular and serves as a minolcular and microscope combo. I think it has been called a "spyscope" to market it as a gadget for kids. However, the quality of this scope is equal, and in my opinion, much better than any reasonably priced minocular made by other companies.

First of all, except for the most expensive scopes, (microscope/telescope combined), all fall short in the quality of the optics. Believe me when I say I have tried many handheld dual purpose scopes and found most to be toys and not truly useful for field trips. If you want to carry a scope that will do both for you, be light and small and have quality optics, then this is the one for any reasonable price. I was impressed with both sharpness, focal length, and flatness of field this scope has. The one real benefit this scope has is it's ability to extend the tube length when focusing as a microscope far beyond what most dual combo scopes can. Most manufacturers will sacrifice lens quality in an effort to keep the extended tube length low. This is the very reason most combo scopes do not excel either as a microscope or a telescope. I do not, however, find the longer tube length to be any annoyance, but rather "comfortable" in it's design. Distances are well marked on the outer tube. At least on mine it is.

Along with the scope there is a additional microscope lens attachment extending the range for the microscope and positions it the proper distance from the object. I do not believe you would need to carry this in the field because the regular manifications seem just fine for field use. It is compact enough though if you should want to take it. The microscope attachment is in two pieces and the lower piece can be unscrewed from the upper lens if you want to use it freehand. The one thing you want to remember is to not screw any of the pieces in too tight when attaching them as they will lock making it very difficult to unscrew,(as the plastic is already rather tight to screw together to start with).

The down side is the case included is not dust proof since it only has a velcro flap, and it would have been nice to have a case that would allow for both the scope and the extra microscope attachment. As it is, the case only holds the scope, which is ok with me since I most likely wouldn't be carrying the microscope attachement in the field. Nevertheless, I still give it five stars because it is the only one with it's quality for the price in my opinion.

While it may not compare to more expensive combo scopes on the market, it certainly is a cut above the rest that I have seen for twice the price. I fell in love with this simple scope right off the bat, especially when I saw the optics in action.
