The pup is adorable and every one of his friends that has come over loves it. They love how it moves its mouth and neck and almost seems alive.
As a parent, I was very impressed with the Smarty Ants website. There are so many activities and games on there. Plenty to keep your child busy for a very long time. There are games for those just learning to read, those in between and those who are already good readers. We've been using the system for a few weeks and I have already seen an improvement in his reading. He even went to school and bragged to his teacher that he knew what a conjunction was. :)
I think the Smarty Ants system is a great investment and not just some trendy product that will end up in the closet and never played with, or a subscription that never gets used.

My daughter (4) received this toy for her 4th birthday. She loves the dog and absolutely loves playing "smarty ants" on the computer. She loves playing the (simple easy to do) games. I thought she'd tire quickly of the repition, but has not. She loves it and asks everyday to play it. The dog is adorable and she carries it with her. Great educational toy.Best Deals for Smarty Ants Phonics Reading Pup White w/ 1 Year Subscription
Before considering this purchase, please read other reviews for the other three SmartyAnts dogs. You will find they are not all glowing as this one reviewer has made it seem.Yes, the robotic dog is adorable and his test mode is almost worth the price! He is soft and cute and watching his mouth move intrigues the little ones. However, after we get past that, it becomes a problem. His original "test" mode does not come with nearly enough songs or talking to even get buy for more than five minutes.
Downloading his software to a MAC was impossible. We could not get him to work on a MAC depsite our system meeting all the requirements listed on the box. Not a problem, let me just download it to my pc. Sigh. Okay, another long task, but it will all be worth it, right?
I enrolled my just turned 4 year old at the SmartyAnts site. Again, this download takes some time, but it went rather smoothly!
The first activity was to jump in the pool onto the correct letter. It was fun to jump in the pool and catch the right letter! However, how do you get out of the game? There is no "escaping" the letter pool. You have to continue on to see how many you get right or wrong in order to continue. For a child that does not know all of their letters, you will have to help or remain in the pool.
I thought that the SmartyAnts dog would read my child stories, but that's not really the case. You have to work through each lesson and sort of "earn" the story. For a child that is just learning, this makes it difficult as the process is lengthy. They aren't going to earn that story right away.
Cost? Compared to free preschool games you can find online, I had to ask myself, "Would this really be worth $25 for three months?" The answer was fast, "no, not really". If I had received this as a GIFT and it had come with a years subscription, then maybe it would be worth it. I just don't see the cost benefit here. The dog does not interact with your child as he/she works through the lessons.
Also, where oh where is the music section for SmartyAnts? It was nowhere to be found for us. I suppose we didn't "earn" it??? No idea, but again, I thought we were going to get a dog that would sing songs and read stories. I didn't realize all these things had to be earned.
I will have to try it out with an older child and see how they do with it. It didn't work out to more than a cute robotic dog for my advanced four year old.
