so on a recent outing when we had scientists and students in the cave and ravine I had a workshop with several of Dr. Cool's kits. They were provided to me for feedback (not positive feedback, honest feedback of any kind,) First, they were all hugely popular. And all great for kids that were tiny on up to teens and that is a highly unusual toy or activity that can cross enjoyment like that. Actually, they were a big activity for the adults too!
With this one, kids use safe excavation tools to find three genuine dinosaur artifacts they have to excavate from a dinosaur head via carefully chipping away. The dino head, is of course, made to enclose them but the artifacts are genuine.
While they loved the mosasaur tooth and dinosaur bone, the dinosaur poop was the biggest hit of all. I mean, we are talking kids here who love nothing more than a good bodily function joke, right?
The magnifying glass couldn't be passed around quickly enough for that dino poo!!
Better yet, this provides true learning with the booklet enclosed and great conversation with a parent. Also, once the activity is over they still have real artifacts to show their friends and talk about far past the date of the activity, creating a memory far longer lasting.

My 11 year old daughter was eager to try out this kit. She had helped her brother recently complete the Real Bug Digging Kit made by the same company, and was looking forward to completing this kit by herself. We set out some paper and she started whittling away at the Dino head. The digging tool has no pointed or sharp ends, so it's safe for kids. She took her time and slowly carved away at it. One by one she found the hidden specimens and excitedly announced to everyone that she had found one, and what it was she found each time. After digging them all out, she washed them up and then referenced the information booklets included in the kit, reading about what each item was she had found. She made quite a big deal about the Dino-poop specimen, and even now days later still tells her friends about how she dug out Dino-poop from the kit. This kit is such a fun idea as a gift for kids, especially those from about 6 years old to 11 years old. This kit is a great idea for kids learning about dinosaurs, or kids who just love anything dinosaur related. It's unique, fun for a range of ages, both girls and boys alike will have fun with it, and it's at a great price for gift giving. A sample of this product was provided by the manufacturer for an unbiased and honest review. It's a terrific toy idea and makes for a great birthday or Christmas gift, especially when you're looking to buy something for a child that someone else likely hasn't already bought for them!

The Dino Digging Kit is a plaster mold of a dinosaur head containing three real fossils: dino dung, mosasaur tooth, and dinosaur bone. Also included is a digging tool, a brush, a plastic magnifying glass, an informative booklet, and a a dinosaur related activity booklet (word search, crossword puzzle, maze, etc).My daughter was very excited about the Dino Dig Kit. Because we had experience with the Shark Teeth Digging Kit, she started digging at the front of the dinosaur head. Sure enough, we almost immediately found the dino poop and the dinosaur bone fossils. Even though it took time to excavate, knowing we had found something gave her incentive to keep digging.
As my daughter dug, I read her the booklet. It explains the advent of paleontology, how fossils are formed, what are coprolites (dino poop fossils), and a little about the mosasaur.
After we freed the bone and poop, we continued digging through the head. I nearly gave up at the end when we had gone through nearly the entire head, but the mosasaur tooth was near the back of the head. It was worth it. She is thrilled with her finds.
Keep in mind that this is a messy activity. Use a newspaper and do it outdoors. Also, I did help my daughter dig. It took us an hour between the two of us. If she did it herself, it would have taken much longer. I only wish the digging tool had a handle. After an hour of digging, my hand developed a small blister. Perhaps use a flathead screwdriver instead.
My daughter and I enjoyed the Dino Dig Kit. She gives it five stars. I highly recommend this kit as a gift, especially to children interested in dinosaurs. My daughter knows one such child in her class for which this kit would be a guaranteed hit. It's absolutely wonderful -fun to do and highly educational.
