The local librarian translated the English version of this book to Mandarin during story time, and cool, it's now available as an eReadbook. Aside from the usual shortcomings of the eReadbook pen (no on-pen volume control buttons, cannot switch from book to dictionary without tapping the front covers, can only read entire passages), these Bear books are clearly designed with self-directed interactive learning as a key goal. Different books offer different levels of difficulty from a single line of text per page to multiple lines of text. There is a glossary and the included terms are highlighted in the story. Objects in the pictures will have associated sounds or speech. Speech toggles between English and Mandarin if the object/person is tapped repeatedly. The voices unfortunately also change with the language and is not always equally in character or even the same gender. There is also an activity page in the back of the book. Simplified Chinese text is used and there are no other aids (BoPoMo nor Pin Yin).

I'm using this for my 4 year old son. It is a great reading toy for chinese and english. There are many words that repeat and the books are sectioned off into topics. I love the ereadbooks. The only thing I have critical to say is that you cannot choose an individual word to repeat. The pen will read the entire sentence not an individual word.
