I will refer to the lens plus cup piece of the device as the "eye piece". See attached photos to view eye piece separated from main body.
Once the eye piece is pulled off the main unit (it pressure fits onto a mount on the main unit) the entire eye piece (lens and cup) can simply be placed on top of anything you want a closer look at (6x magnification), or you can put anything that will fit on to the main pieces glass window and replace the eye piece to be able to view from top at 6x or through the side lens at 4x (yellow "nob" like piece attached to side of main unit is actually a lens) . The side lens reflects off of a cleverly mounted mirror inside the main unit and views the bottom of whatever is placed is the viewing area. Kids seem to enjoy looking down thru the top lens to get that view and then quickly switching to the side lens to see the specimen from the bottom..
The most fun we had was examining bugs outdoors without ever having to disturb them by just placing the eye piece on the ground over a bug and viewing from the top. Soon we learned the right focal distance and were looking at tree branches, leaves, aphids and other "must investigate" items around the house and yard by simply using the eye piece like a magnifying glass.
