In fact, as much as kids love em, sure, they are actually a fairly sophisticated percussion instrument that is like nothing I have ever come across. What I love is the beautiful tones they produce.
You can hit it anywhere, on the middle of the head, the edge of the head, of even just smack it on the rim, and the sound is amazing. I have had people beat mine as hard as someone might hit a snare drum, and with a real drumstick too... and they still sound great.
What makes 'em so cool is whatever technology Remo has produced to make these Sound shapes. The heads are ultra high tension, they are virtually indestructible (and believe me, I've taken em to a drunken and wild drum circle and had people try to destruct them!), and the rim, is so strong that the tone never changes of shifts at all. I've had mine for almost a year and a half, and while yes, there are a few tiny dents in the heads, the shapes are totally standing up!!
Structural Integrity is what I would call it.
Amazing pieces of craftsmanship in a drumming-like contraption.
--Oh, and yes, kids do love em, but I have seen many (including me) adults make all kinds of sounds from these things. You can mute them,change the sound by pushing hard or soft on the head while hitting it. You can use a stick or tap it softly with your fingers... and if you really want to have fun, get a bunch of creative and skilled musicians together with them and look out!!! These gismos ROCK the HOUSE entirely!!!

WOW are these great. This was a gift purchase for my 3 yr old nephew who had constructed his own drumset from pots and pans. These are much easier to store than a traditional drumset and the quality of the Remo Sound Shapes is far superior to a child's drumset. The sturdiness of these will stand up to many abuses a 3yr old can inflict on his play things. The sound quality is far superior to a child's drumset and much better than his pots/pans drum set. I bought these for my 14 month old daughter after she had played with them at a friend's house. She absolutely loves them! I like that there are multiple sizes that each make a different sound. It's also fun to have several people playing together. These sound shapes are fine for children's music class, or maybe a drum circle where you don't care much about quality. I guess I was expecting too much from these based on the reviews. The three largest frames were warped so the drums wouldn't stack flat, and the edges of the frames weren't smoothly finished. Yes, they are loud, but not very resonant. I sent them back and was promptly issued a refund.
