As a chemical engineer and a parent, it is extremely important to me to balance product safety and responsible manufacturing. Furthermore, I want to invest in toys that will survive not only my daughter, but any other children or grandchildren that I may be blessed with. Few toys are more durable than wooden ones; fewer still foster an imagination. I bought this item for my one-year-old, and while I admit she's under the age range for this toy, she's fine using it under supervision. (Very determined fingers can pull off the metal keys, but these are easily pushed back into place with no harm done.) There is a version of this by the same company for her age group (Plan Toy Oval Xylophone), but it lacks the song sheets for when she's older. Regardless of which one you choose, this is great for starting kids out on "music" by teaching small ears that there are other sounds to be made than just banging on the wall.
