I had been looking around for a large scale model of the Saturn V rocket since taking a day trip to the Air and Space Museum out at Dulles Airport. Initially, all the models I came across online were single piece wooden models that were only about a foot and half tall and not very detailed. A week into searching, I came across the 4D model. Had to wait almost 2 months for them to come back in stock, but WOW was it worth the weight. Dont let the piece count fool you, it went together in about 2 hours with only minor assembly issues. Despite what the instructions say, you WILL need a little styrene glue for some of the smaller pieces that arent meant to come off, especially the little red pieces that attach to the stage 1 engines. Beyond that, it went together like a dream. And the size....I know it says 43 inches on the box, but that doesnt really prepare you for the magnitude of the thing once its together. And whats best is that the transparent panels are only on one side, so if you just want to see the solid rocket, just rotate it around. Well worth the price and the wait.

I recently purchased this model as I was intrigued by having a cut-away model of a Saturn V. I was rather impressed with the construction of the model and how it goes together. The engineering in the way the lunar lander goes together is brilliant. Though the model makes a nice showpiece and I'm glad of the purchase there are a few flaws in the model that made me deduct 2 stars from the review.

1. Accuracy The SIVB (third) stage of the Famemaster Saturn V is corrugated throughout its entire length instead of just on the top and bottom rings of the Original Saturn V. this is not as apparent on the cut-away side but is very noticeable on the solid side. This is a glaring error and would have been very easy to correct as the center piece of the SIVB is a separate piece. They could have easily remanufactured this piece as smooth instead of corrugated and fixed the problem. I'm tempted to write them and see if I could get a replacement piece that I could experiment on sanding down until its smooth.

2. Painting Quality Control. Though the overall paint job on the model is pretty good there are some really back black over sprays on the black roll pattern markings. I was able to touch up the most glaring of them with some white paint but I'll really have to spend some time to clean it all up. I also had a command module which had been painted too heavily and had the paint sag in a ring about the base. This was combined with a ding in the shell where it had attached to the sprue. This was fixed with some putty, sanding and a new coat of paint but I feel I should not have had to do this work on $300 model.

All in all this is a fair model of a Saturn V that really could be stunning if the manufacturer fixed the issue with the SIVB and had some better quality control on the painting of the model.

I have meticulously put together dozens of aerospace models since childhood and for its size and complexity this is the most extraordinary, hassle-free, and impressive-looking models I have ever assembled. It is ideal for those of us who don't have the patience for the mess of gluing dozens of pieces together and then painting it all. It took me at least six hours to snap the model together but every minute was a pleasure because the parts fit so well. The tiny lunar model, which is geometrically complex with lots of little parts snapped together in 10 minutes. Have Epoxy and Superglue ready for a few parts that need some extra anchoring. It's a real showpiece for any collection.

I completed this model without too much difficulty. Parts fit with precision. The difficulty and assembly will be the positioning of the fuel tank ends. Be sure and do a trial fit of the transfer tubes through all of the holes in the tube's before you glue them into the tank tabs. I Fit them and Marked then put a couple of small spots of crazy glue and secured the tank ends to one half of the exterior shell and place them together and double checked with the Dowell to ensure the plastic transfer tubes would fit from top to bottom final ruling.

The other thing is the assembly of the LEM is like putting together a Lego, the parts fit together with precision, but they could have molded the main body in one piece and save a lot of time. I guess they did in thesis because of the colors required.

As with dragons other models. The basis are usually much too flimsy for the models. I always make a base of would, usually red Oak. Red Oak. Another woulds can be bought at Home Depot or Lowe's by the foot.

This model now completed will be displayed and signed by numerous astronauts at the November 9th and 10th astronaut autographs and memorabilia show at Kennedy space Center. Show is sponsored by the astronaut scholarship foundation [ www.astronautscholarship.org ]

Great educational model. I am buying another one for myself
