My son is 13 and has been in speech therapy for 2 years during the school year. The speech teacher at his school advised me to practice 10 minutes daily during the summer. I did practice, but felt he was just practicing the wrong sound for 10 minutes daily. After I bought the speech buddy, I noticed an immediate difference in his "R" sound. I had no idea how to tell him to make the "R" sound. This helped him to place his tongue in the right position. We did the speech buddy academy exercises. I think this has been more productive than the speech classes at school. I am proud of myself and my son. This is an expensive tool, but really helpful. I would highly recommend it.

I am a clinically certfied SLP in the public schools (Shreveport,Louisiana), and have been practicing speech therapy since 1980. I currently have 3 children with consistent, unstimulable vocalic r distortions (ages K-4th grade), so I ordered the R Speech Buddy, and enthusiastically payed the $124.00 plus tax and shipping. I considered the price of the Speech Buddies to be unreasonably high, but if worked, it would be worth every penny! Unfortunately, none of my three children have yet been able to produce an acceptable vocalic r with the aid of the Speech Buddy, and I have been working with the tool for about 3 weeks now. I have not been able to elicit even a modified distortion of vocalic r with any of these kids. I own the tool now, and will continue to use it among the other techniques I use to teach this sound. I believe these tools, however, are overpriced, and in the case of R Speech Buddy, not that effective.

I am a public school speech/language pathologist. A family purchased the /r/ speech buddy, at my request, for their 5th grade son. We had worked together throughout the previous school year to get him to the point (in terms of oral-motor strength and agility) of beginning to work on /r/. Within ten minutes of using the /r/ speech buddy, he produced a reasonably good initial /r/. The following week, he was producing perfect final /r/ without the device. In response to the SLP who wrote a negative review of this product, I would caution that the child must be ready to produce an /r/. Many first graders are not.
