If you're looking for a reasonably-priced telescope for amateur sky-watching with children, this is a good choice. We used this right after sunset, in an urban back yard, and were able to easily see Saturn's rings. I'm sure the viewing would be even better in areas with less light pollution. We have yet to test this with the moon, but are excited for a full moon, so we can see it in more detail. Stars aren't as exciting, as they just look like a bigger and brighter version of themselves, but planets are exciting to see. I would recommend this telescope to friends.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This telescope has been a lot of fun for our family. We are complete novices at using telescopes, but have been successful at viewing the moon's surface, a planet, and some stars. The telescope has very good instructions for assembling, but not much about using the telescope (what to look for, recommended eyepieces for different situations, etc). We found it helpful to read about this online, or in an "Astronomy for Dummies" book (yes, really.)

This telescope seems to be sturdily made. The mount is sturdy, and the aiming mechanism works very smoothly.

We think this is a good value for a beginner telescope.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a very good starter telescope for the price. It comes with two lenses (9 mm and 20 mm), and a 2x Barlow lens. Assembly was very simple. All lenses and the sighter are secured with simple thumb screws, so no tools are required. The optics are fine for this price range. If your child becomes an enthusiast, then an upgrade to some better optics will probably be needed, but this telescope is a perfectly fine entry point for the curious child. The front opening is a bit small, so the amount of light getting in to the optics is limited. That means that lighter objects in the sky will be harder to make out and you will lose some detail. But again, as a starter, this is fine, especially considering that incremental steps up in optics can get very expensive. As for using this telescope, the manufacturer did a great job on the tripod. It is very sturdy and has negligible shake. Adjusting the telescope's position is done with a long adjustment rod and by loosening a large finger screw on the tripod. Motion is smooth and solid for a telescope at this price level. Craters on the moon are great, and we can make out the moons of Jupiter. Will test on Saturn as it becomes more visible late at night over the winter. Since we can see the moons of Jupiter, I expect we will be able make out Saturn's rings as well. So overall, highly recommended as a starter telescope for your young child, especially considering the price.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program My First Lab Stargazer Telescope is a good starter telescope offered for a fair price. It offers enough magnification and ease of setup and use that inexperienced, budding astronomers will have little trouble preparing it for use and enjoying their evenings outdoors, gazing skyward.

Out of the box, this telescope is practically ready to use. Only a few things need to be assembled and no tools are necessary. The included tripod is sturdy and ready to go. In little time, the telescope is prepared to aim toward the heavens and offer upclose views of the moon, planets, etc.

This telescope isn't anything magnificent, but it does offer some noteworthy features. I really like the included tripod. Its legs are completely sturdy if placed on concrete, wood, and most other surfaces. It won't slide around at all, and that makes it perfect for those times when you zero in on a celestial object and want to take turns viewing. The tripod holds the view in place so that everyone can have a peek. The only issue I have with the tripod is the low heightit is adjustable, but it still doesn't go very high. I often set mine up on a table, but I have found that if you do this, the sturdiness is lost because table tops are usually very smooth. You need to place something else on top of the table first, to lessen the sliding.

Telescopes are great when they can be easily used to find what you want and then magnify them to your expectations. This telescope earns average marks in both areas. You can find what you want through the viewer, but it does take time and the small opening doesn't allow for much light. Then again, this is really a beginner's telescope so it cannot be expected to excel in these and other areas. It provides what you need to get you and your young ones started out, and that is what I expect.

Viewing the heavens above is often fascinating and this telescope is certainly a good one for rookies and other casual viewers of the nighttime sky. It isn't the best telescope you will ever use, but it does cover the basics and is priced right.
