The only down side I can see to this system is for the parent that thinks they can hand this off to their child and walk away to do something else. That may be the case after they figure out how it all works, but until that point, adult guidance is useful. It's worked out well for us because I sit down next to her and help her out a bit. Maybe in the future she'll get into it more and then will be more independent, but for now it's definitely something we have to do together.

I bought this LeapPad for my son last year and my son has been playing with it for a year now. Today I bought him a new LeapPad book and only half way through the new book, the LeapPad stopped working. At first I thought it was the batteries, but soon I figured out the problem is at the wiring of the pen. It only works when I hold the pen at a certain angle. But how can you tell a 4-year-old to hold it still all the time! It basically is a piece of junk now sitting in my garage. My son has been playing with LeadPad products since he was 17 months old. The LittleTouch LeapPad worked great. The 2nd one (My First LeapPad) broke after one year. Now the 3rd LeapPad also broke after one year. LeapFrog really needs to improve the durability of their products.

I did not purchase this product as I found out from Leapfrog that they are discontinuing it. I e-mailed the company to be sure, and was told "We are not producing this item anymore but we still have inventory of the books on-line and at the stores." So basically, it may be a great toy but if you intend to buy it I'd be sure to get all the books you want now, because who knows how long they will continue to be available. Their "Tag" system is the new thing they're doing to replace this.Honest reviews on LeapFrog Read & Write LeapPad®
I got this for my 4 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas with the reading and writing book and she loves it her 3 year old brother fights for a chance to read and write in it too. We also got one for our 6 year old nephew who is in Kindergarten with the dinosaur book and he loves it too he loved how interactive it was and wanted to show us everything he was discovering.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for LeapFrog Read & Write LeapPad®
There are several Leap learning products out there but none so user friendly as this one. My daughter is WAY too young for this though. She's three and can't read or write yet, so the pencil inside the pointer was useless for her. Plus you have to buy the pecial books for that level of learning. It's age appropriate for post-kindergarteners looking to get a leg up though! This is so inexpensive that whatever book she uses, even the higher level books she just really enjoys having the book react and speak to her. I'm glad to have her learn the vocabulary either way. Batteries last and last.
Buy a carrying case, this one is definately a great travel toy for the car.
There are several books that are more relevant to the pre-k learning level:
Leap Frog Stanley Surprise Safari Pre-K Kindergarten (Leap Frog, Leap Pad)
The Amazing Big Top Letter Circus (For Use with Leap Pad--NOT Included) (Leap Frog, Pre-K tp 2nd Grade)
LeapFrog LeapPad Storage System
