Varied selection of reading material that is definitely high interest but with the new Common Core standards I would suggest buying the 5th grade book for the 4th grade since the complexity of reading has so drastically increased. The 4th grade one for 4th grade students would be good for your just proficient or slightly below proficient readers. The beginning of the book has the Lexile scores for the selections so you can choose which is best for your group of students.
This would also be a great book for parents to work with their children to improve reading. Read it and then discuss using the questions at the end of the selections.
We use them for morning work in the 4th grade and vary which ones we use depending on the reading ability of the students.
Teachers can use the selection and then create Common Core type questions around the text. That is the one drawback to the book the questions that are asked are basic and not those meaty inferential questions that most students struggle with in reading.
All in all a good resource and helpful when leaving sub plans.
