I decided to fork out a few extra bucks to get this shaker because it's rather unique, and I wanted to hear the sounds that other reviewers described as rattlesnake-like and mellow. It's is indeed more mellow (a lower tone) than other shakers, and its appearance is just as neat as the pictures show.
There is a disappointing problem (for me), however, which is its size. The egg is a little over 3" (8cm) in length and 2.25" (5.5cm) across. My hand, from tip of middle finger to base of palm is about 6.75" (17cm) and I cannot adequately enclose the shaker with one hand. (See picture uploaded product image.) I can do the standard "accent" note/shake just fine, but incorporating techniques that include opening up and enclosing my fingers around it in order to make a muffled or less-bright sound is rather cumbersome, I can't get as much dampening effect as I'd like, and it is much easier to drop. If you have nice, big hands, though, go for it. Or if you intend on holding it without that sort of technique, this will probably suit you just fine as it is.
This is probably also a good size for small kids who aren't as concerned about producing specific sounds to grab (as intended, Nino is a children's line of products). I wouldn't recommend this for infants who still put objects in their mouths simply because it is a skin.

I absolutely love the dry sound of a rawhide shaker and this one sounds splendid and is the perfect size for my smallish hands. My only concern is that the holes for the stitching are a little large and as it's filled with tiny pebbles, several smaller bits have come out of the holes. While I was under the assumption that Meinl's Nino products were geared towards children, I would not recommend this to small children because of this hence the 4 out of 5 star rating.Best Deals for NINO Skin Egg Shaker
Not a toy for kiddos still mouthing objects. It has a superior rattlesnake tail sound. The translucent skin might creep out some people but the sound is awesome.Honest reviews on NINO Skin Egg Shaker
This rawhide shaker feels good in the hand, has a high quality sound. A great percussion instrument for a jam.Find helpful customer reviews and review ratings for NINO Skin Egg Shaker
If you want a little variety in your hand percussion toolbox, this is a good add. It has a lovely, soft, lower sound compared to typical plastic eggs. It's a little bigger in the hand (though that doesn't bother me). It may require mic'ing if you have to compete with a lot of other instruments. Very high quality product, regardless of being a "kids line".Be forewarned... my dog mistook my first one for a rawhide toy...
