My daughter absolutely loves this toy. It's one of her all-time favorites, and she's spent hours reading the books to herself and dancing to the clever music for the various books. So why only three stars? The memory. In an era where most memory chips are measured in GB, this toy has only 5 MB of storage. That's right: 5 MB. That's the rough equivalent of three 3.5" floppies. Unfortunately, the different books each take between .6-1.0 MB of storage, and the vowel sounds books (her favorites) take a total of 3.5 MB (and unfortunately, you have to download all of the five books, which only leaves space for one or two additional books). Honestly, this has worked to the company's disadvantage, as I've stopped buying Tag Jr books for my daughter because it's such a pain to sync new books to the device (you have to use a mini USB to connect it to your computer with the Leapfrog software installed). Really, this needs to have at least twice the space to be more workable. If it was 50 MB, we'd probably have every Tag Jr book they offer. As it is now, we'll probably just stop with the ones we've bought already. Really, it's a shame.

I am happy with the overall concept and performance of the Tag Junior system; however, I am disappointed to find that it doesn't hold that many books. It comes with a short vowel book set, and in addition to that I purchased several other books. When I took it home, I discovered that after downloading the short vowel book set, there was only enough memory for two more books. I was very excited when I ordered Scout, the Tag book pal, for my 2 year old son for Christmas. My son loves to read and is very smart for his age (I'm sure many mothers say that, but it's very true). Although he is a quick learner and has a large vocabulary, this product wasn't as age appropriate or user-friendly as I had hoped. I don't mind the small amount of memory space, because too many books uploaded at one time won't hold a 2-year-old's attention span, anyway. The actual design of the toy is what I'm disappointed with. It's a great idea, but the shape of Scout makes it hard to see where exactly he is pointing to on the page. Therefore, it doesn't easily relate what Scout says to the words on the page or the pictures it refers to, and my son gets frustrated trying to get it to work correctly. It's also a tad bit large for small hands. Plus, the power button is located right where he holds it, and it's very easy for him to turn it on and off. When it does power on/off, Scout makes a little musical sound. My son takes advantage of this much more than using it like it's actually meant to be played with, which can get annoying very quickly to hear that same note over and over. The power button definitely should be placed differently or be a switch instead of a button. I'm not sure why this toy was rated for children as young as 12 months, because that's surely not accurate. Maybe if it was up to the parents to hold Scout and move it over the books it would work better, but if your child is as independent as mine that wouldn't fly. This is supposed to promote independent reading skills, but it takes a little more dexterity to maneuver than what a child 2 years and younger has.I really wish I had gone with the regular Tag reading system with the pen instead. My son loves coloring and holds a pencil well, so I feel that design would work better for pointing at things in the book. It would also serve more as a reading tool that's meant to go with the books rather than a little plastic dog that looks like a play toy all on its own. And FYI, the Tag pen WILL read the older level Tag books as well as the Tag Junior books. It may save you some money to just buy the Tag reading system if this product works well for your child and you want it to advance with him/her. I didn't know that at the time I purchased this, but really wish I did. Overall, I rate this at 3 stars only because I think the idea is wonderful, but otherwise would NOT recommend it for a child 2 years old or younger. It may be more appropriate closer to 4 years old, but as I said before, you would then be better off buying the regular Tag pen.

I like the concept that Leap frog came up with I just wish they would have warned me that violet has a very small hard drive. You have to go to the leapfrog connect software in order to download the content for the books. I purchased two books, the flash cards, and the set of books that teaches vowels. The set of vowel books comes with six separate books. I could not download all of the books from the set and download the other books I purchased. The software will not let you download one or two books out of the set. it is all six or none at all. So I could only download the two books and the flash cards. If I want my daughter to read the other books I have to hook Violet back up to the computer and remove some books off of the hard drive. So if she picks up a book that is not on the hard drive I have to hook the hardware up to the computer and shuffle downloads around. That is too time consuming for me. I bought this for my 20 month old. She decided she wanted to bang it on the books rather than tap it and it held up to her torment. I'll let her have another go at it when she gets older because she doesn't grasp the concept yet. The other downfall is the on/off switch located on the side of the product. She would constantly push it and hence turn it off.
