I am a homeschooling mom of a 9 year old who was diagnosed with an ASD. After attending public and private schools and constantly feeling as though I was attempting to "teach" the teachers the most effective methods to teach my son, I decided to take on the task myself. I didn't know if I could do it since I'm an RN, not an educator. My son was struggling with learning difficulties that I had figured out were "learning differences." He can learn, but not through traditional methods. What works for a majority of kids (including myself and my other 3 children) was completely useless to him and left all of us frustrated. The schools would work with him, but essentially they "helped" by altering his tests making them easy enough for him to pass and be move along. It's not hard to figure out that this is not addressing the problem, but it is how kids get passed from grade to grade and fall through the cracks. I've had to research alternate methods to teach nearly every aspect of math to my son. The best way I've found to describe teaching him is that a back door must be found to enter his brain, because the front door (the one neurotypical kids learn by) is locked. Each skill accomplishment is like a huge, hard fought victory. Once we find the alternate door or route, it's awesome! The discovery of these blocks was one of those victories! He had learned place value, and knows all addition and subtraction facts. Once we started adding and subtracting larger numbers and attempted regrouping (carrying or borrowing) he just lost it. He was struggling and could not grasp it. I found these multi colored manipulatives and decided it was worth a try. SUCCESS!! He actually started loving to do math problems so he could play with the "blocks," and he could finally visualize the regrouping process by using the blocks. He loved adding and being able to change out 10 yellow "1" blocks for 1 green "10" block! It was especially fun for him to be able to use the "1,000" cube. Regrouping was now a game! I write all this because I have researched and found methods to teach him often based on parents who also struggled and found a successful way to reach their child. I hope that if there's someone else out there desperately looking for a way to teach a child that is like my son, whether from autism or some other learning difference, that this may help.
