Heck, even the adults have had fun brushing up on their geography and anatomy with it. It's a real winner.
The 2 complaints: (1) There need to be more books for kids in the 2nd-4th grade range; (2) remember that you'll need to drop more money for new books to keep this product relevant for your childs age.
If your child is between 1st and 3rd grade, likes electronic toys, and can play alone, this is a great purchase. If your child is younger, consider one of the other LeapPads. If your child is older, consider the iQuest (see my review there).

I do admit my daughter is too young for this toy (she got it for her 3rd birthday)--that said, she absolutely LOVES it. She plays with it every single day. We have many different books for her to use with it (mostly LeapPad books since they also play in the Quantum Pad player though she LOVES the sampler book and the other two that came with the quantum pad player when we bought it.) She now knows more about the presidents and the map and flags of Europe than I do! She's also the only 3yo I know who can tell you what many of the bones in her body are called. We buy the books when Toys R Us has a buy 2 get one free sale so we pay $10 a piece for the books instead of $15.I like it better than the LeapPad player because of it's smaller size--much less cumbersome for my 3 yo to handle.
My only complaint is that we've only had it for 3 months and already we need to send away for a replacement pen. (which is available for $...if the cord is damaged from the Leapfrog.com website, and is free if the cord is not damaged, you just have to send the cord back to the company with your request for a new one).

My 10 year old son received the Quantum Pad for Christmas last year. It was a great gift, everyone in the house enjoyed it. BUT he quickly became tired of the same books. So, we bought more, in fact, we bought the entire collection of five books. Since then he has read all the books, to the point that he can recite the stories. AND, there are no more books! That stinks! The online magazine that works in conjunction with the Mind Station is also a waste unless you're a pre-school student. This product was not well planned for the older student. I am a grandmother that has always had the leap products for my grandkids, and they have all excelled in school going above their grade levels. Leap Pads and Quantum Pads make learning so much fun and their little brains are like magnets from birth to 10yrs of age! We have 4 children and as a high school science teacher I know what a difference it makes in a child's ability to do well in high school if they have gotten the basics down COMPLETELY before they get to high school. Our 4th grader has a difficult time with her reading skills and does not have the attention span that we feel she needs at this point in her life. We are constantly having to beg, plead, bribe her to let us work with her on these skills but it doesn't last long before she is up and doing something else. We bought this toy for her with lots of the books and messenger bag for Christmas. SHE LOVES IT!!!!She will sit down and just work with it and laughs. What a great gift this toy made. The neat thing is we can keep adding on by simply purchasing the books and cartridges as we need to and she won't get bored. A lot of toys are played with for a little while and then forgotten about...not this one!!!! If you haven't bought this for your 3rd-5th grader please check it out...you'll be glad you did!!!
