Bought one of these (that doesn't rotate) nearly two years ago (it has been on continuously.) If you want to have somthing floating on your desk with nothing above and around an inch of air space underneath... it's pretty cool. The device uses a combination of rare earth magnets and electronic controls and coils to keep it floating. It's silent, interesting, and a great conversation piece for the office. I'll probably buy another one if the electronics in this one ever fail (it's getting harder to get it to float, I suspect the electronics are getting weaker.) Probably most appealing to engineers and scientist types. The chrome base is nice. I do wish they would cover the silver band in the middle of the globe.

It arrived today in the mail. For the past 3 hours, my wife, daughter (13), and I have each been taking turns trying to make it float, all to no avail.

We are all very frustrated.

The instructions are useless, one page, basically says "keep trying!" The instruction videos on YouTube make it look effortless. It's not.

I even asked Yoda to help me use the Force.

I could not make it work.

Update: I finally was able to make it work!! It is actually very cool. I would now rate it with 4 stars!!

We got this for a 13 year old boy who is into anything scientific. It is a winner. It sits on his desk as he does his home work and slowly spins. It is easy to center with a little dexterity and spins with a slight touch or blow through your lips. If you are clumsy or impatient, don't get this. Place it somewhere safe so it doesn't get bumped, as it will fall if the base is moved. We have had it for about 4 months now and the attraction hasn't waned. This globe is not a fast action toy, but rather a dream-maker.

I really like this product. It was a little difficult at first to figure how I was going to place the glob in the correct spot so that it will rotate and float. My only real complaint is that I did not receive what is in the picture. The Levitron Ion I received has a round platform while the one in the picture of the square platform. I really wanted the square on. I tried to contact the seller, but got no response about it.
