Algebra Tiles are excellent manipulatives designed to teach students to conceptualize and manipulate polynomials in a new, more concrete way.Uses:
1) Understanding negative and positive numbers in a concrete, physical, visual manner. You can SEE the negative numbers and move them around, and see how a negative value plus a positive equal value makes zero. This is valuable for grades 1-12, since many high schoolers take negative rules on faith and lack a fundamental understanding.
2) Representing polynomials in a visual, concrete, tactile form.
3) Adding and subtracting polynomials in a visual, concrete, tactile form.
4) Relating [length * width = area] to the multiplication of polynomials [x * x = x^2].
5) Multiplying, dividing, and factoring polynomials in a visual, concrete, tactile form.
6) Developing problem-solving skills and logical thinking.
Recommendations:
I really like the workbook by Learning Resources, "Algebra Tiles Workbook" -it's far better quality and a far better teaching tool than the other workbooks available, and is affordable. I would recommend that users of Algebra Tiles purchase that particular workbook as well.
Other Notes:
I've used printed Algebra Tiles for years -I made them myself, printed them, laminated and cut them out -because of the expense of a classroom set of the real ones. Keep in mind, however, that if you choose that option you'll forever be trying to get your fingernails under the corners to pick them up, and there's gradual attrition as they end up lost on the floor. If you only need a couple of sets, definitely get the real ones!
Summary:
A really fantastic product. Can be prohibitively expensive in large quantities, but clearly worth the money if you only need a couple of sets. I recommend these HIGHLY for grades 7-12, whether for classroom, tutoring, or home use. Great for kids of all levels, from special needs to very gifted.
