Cheap Spinny Speller

I'd seen these on another site for a much higher price. Was happy to find them on Amazon for a better deal, and ordered two (one for each of my kids for Christmas).

In addition to the good price, they are larger than I'd expected (which is nice), and obviously quite durable.

But there are two cons to this toy:

1. For some reason I expected each "spin" to line up so it spelled a word. Nope. Some are nonsensical and having my three-year-old asking me what a "cig" is, well, was unexpected to say the least.

2. The blocks are pretty loose, so it won't stay put once you create a word. This could be potentially frustrating for some kids. One of our Spinny Spellers seems a bit tighter than the other. But neither stays put easily once a word is made

Still, they were fun stocking stuffers and worth the inexpensive price. So, four stars because of the price and the potential for some educational fun. But could've been better designed, I think.

This helps 3-5 year olds form words and see their relationships by changing an initial letter or an ending to form different words.

My love of reading is only surpassed by my lack of knowledge to do so. I am quite the scholar when it comes to writing, per contra, I do not do it as you all might imagine. My Argentinean hireling, Gertrude Winifred, writes all of my work as i dictate in a special half-English half-Latin language that I speak around the house. She must also read to me all of my contracts, bills, silent movie subtitles, and other seemingly "legible" items of that nature. While I feel this is not a productive manner of speech, I am beginning to break the aforementioned habits of mine.

I started with all conventional techniques of learning to write in plain English such as private tutors, Roseta Stone, and even reenrolling in my elementary school, but nothing worked. Slowly, I eroded in difficulty until I found the perfect match. This Spinny Speller taught me some simple, yet crucial building blocks of my life in literature. you may get frustrated at first, but do not worry, for these alien hieroglyphics soon become comprehendible with enough work on the characters every day. I have advanced to a third grade reading level in a matter of months thanks to the Spinny Speller! If you ask me, this trinket meant for children is worth 10 times the amount charged. I seriously advise anyone pondering buying this product to buy it now.

We purchased this for one of our children who was learning to read. He plays with it only about once a month. While he enjoys it, another child who is JUST learning to read is enjoying it much more. This is definitely better for young readers just learning phonics. I think it was money well spent, but it is more an educational tool, rather than a toy.
