We were studying Minerals as the end of our year of chemistry with an 8 and 11YO, and I was looking for a set to let them test their mineral sleuthing skills. The set was both large enough and inexpensive enough for what we wanted to do.
It comes with a nail and a streak plate-supply your own penny and glass. I nearly downgraded the kit to four stars for lack of a glass plate, but the size of the samples won me over-applying a hammer, we were able to observe the fracture planes in many samples, something many samples are too small to allow.
The range of hardness, lusters, and other properties represented was very good for a kit in this price range with samples large enough to whack. We bought this for our study on rocks and minerals. I would say this is only good for one student not two. The samples are just not big enough to half. Otherwise it is a good variety of minerals to use with the hardness scale.
