Summary: My rating for this AmScope microscope is 5 stars. The sturdy, all metal frame, stand and mechanical components function as described by the manufacturer. The built-in upper and lower stage lights are worth the extra cost. However, I reluctantly give the seller a 5 star rating for several reasons. I did not receive the microscope model I ordered. I ordered model SE306R-PZ-E. I received model SE306R-AZ-E. The difference is apparently in the design construction of the frame. The "P" in the model number apparently stands for "pillar" and the "A" stands for "arm". In my opinion, the "arm" model is probably more rugged and versatile to use than the "pillar" design so I am satisfied with the model I received. The Instruction Manual supplied with my order is not applicable to AmScope SE series Microscopes. I contacted the seller and he promptly sent me an email attachment with a file download for the correct instruction manual. Who could ask for better customer service that that?

The SE 306R-AZ-E scope is a great choice for the home and certain types of industrial use. It is designed primarily for viewing the surface structure of rocks, minerals, small insects, small electronic components, etc. It is not designed for high magnification viewing of intricate individual cell structures of specimens. At the 80X setting, individual cells of blood, hair, etc. can be seen, but not the internal structure of those cells. Keep in mind that with all scopes, field of view (FOV) decreases as magnification increases. According to my measurements, the FOV is about 10mm or 3/8 inch at the lowest (20X) setting. At 80X, the FOV is only 1mm or 1/32 inch. I intend to order a set of optional WF5X eyepieces. They will provide 10X and 20X magnification and a larger FOV of 3/4 inches at 10X. At 20X the FOV will 3/8 inch.

AmScope 20x-40x-80x Stereo Microscope with USB Digital Camera

The included digital camera performs as described, but I find it difficult to locate specimens on the stage for viewing. That is because with this design microscope, the stage is unmovable. The FOV using the supplied camera is only 1/16 inch with the microscope objective (lower) lens set to 2X. The FOV is only 1/32 inch at the objective lens 4X setting. In my opinion, its limited FOV makes this camera impractical for home use! I hope AmScope will allow me to return the supplied camera for credit toward another camera having a larger FOV.

Final Conclusion: This product is well made and it performs as described by AmScope. The available, optional WF5X eyepieces and a wider FOV camera will make it even more versatile and better suited for home use. I recommend this product and the seller to other prospective buyers.

I ordered 3 of Stereo microscopes to use in my middle school science class. They work great. The clarity of the image was just right to view specimen as well as provide a visual representation for student. Please note the microscope CD does not run on mac computers. I was able to view the images and take pictures by using "photo booth". Open photo booth and click the drop down to connect the usb (to connect the computer and camera). To take picture click the red camera button. The picture of the slide will show up on the computer screen.

I bought this mostly for my kids, but I'm pretty impressed. The whole thing is pretty solid metal, no worries about something breaking. We've taken it "into the field" a few times, it definitely worked well.

That said ;o), I made the following changes:

1. The eye pieces trade in and out between the 10x and 20x. They use a very small screw to hold those in, and it can be a little difficult to take out or put in, as it's on the bottom side (or maybe I'm just a little less evolved than other folks...). So I unscrewed and rotated the eye piece holder (probably there's a real name for that, but I don't know what it is), so that the tapped holes are more on the upper side. Took a whole five minutes.

2. The lights are run off of 120V AC power. There's a 10:1 transformer in there that converts it to 12V AC power, which gets routed to the lights. Ok, so this is strictly my experience, and may not at all pertain to what you're doing, these are not instructions, but for entertainment purposes only. I tried a 12V DC power supply with those lights, works just fine, draws about 0.71 AMPS (resistance of the light bulb is 2 ohms, but I think it's resistance jumps up when it gets hot, ie as soon as you turn it on). So I took out the AC cable and the transformer, put in a couple of banana jacks, and now use a 12V car battery. Which makes taking it to the beach a lot nicer. It took about half an hour, was worth it. But if you do this, know what you're doing, and follow appropriate safety guidelines.

Ah, one thing, the USB camera didn't come with the plastic sleeve shown in the picture (black, cylindrical thing in the far left of the picture). I contacted Amazon, and they are so gung ho about customer service, they more than made it up to me. They've pretty much set the standard of excellence when it comes to customer service, as far as I can tell.

Honest reviews on AmScope 20x-40x-80x Digital Binocular Stereo Microscope with Two

This microscope is well worth the money. It comes very well packaged and also comes with a handy cover for storage. The images are clear and in focus for digital transfer to a computer. My only complaint is the instructions that come with the scope are useless for a first time microscope user. Some people might get frustrated and return the scope for this reason, and that would be a shame. The company should consider developing a simple easy to follow guide directed to first time microscope users.
