I purchased this to be able to take high rez images of live marine creatures, so I was attracted by the distance from the subject the lens would be. It turns out its close to 3 inches, so I can put something in a small basin with a little salt water and easily take pictures from above.
My first attempt was a very small snail, and I quickly discovered that even at a snails pace I was having trouble keeping up with the little bastard as he "ran" around.
After a while I got the hang of it, and got some great pictures.
I purchased the extra set of lights that encircles the lens, and have often used the adjustable brightness settings at far below maximum.
Zoom is very smooth, requires refocusing
Build quality is excellent this thing is solid and heavy.
I gave 4 stars because the box it came in has a bunch of really neat looking pieces that weren't described, and the driver DVD that came in the box had something like Windows 98 drivers that Windows 7 wouldn't even try to work with.
A quick call to customer support got me to a web page where I downloaded the current drivers, loaded them, and was off and running.
Glad I bought it, looking forward to figuring out what all the little supplemental gizmoes are for.
