We are an outdoorsy family. We trek into the woods or onto the beach at least once a week. I purchased this is because my older son is not old enough for boy scouts, is really into exploring the natural world and now he can carry his own "stuff" and not me. It seems to be made well enough and is not heavy or cumbersome. It can slide to his back if he needs to have more space in the front. I think we will have many days of fun with this and I anticipate the four year old to want one also. It does come with a little notebook to write/draw discoveries.

I grabbed one of these for my youngest son's birthday. He loves it when we go out for a hike because it fits all of his gear. His older brother loved it also and got jealous. So he received one for his birthday also.
