This is a nice kit. We bought this along with Elenco Snap Circuits Green Alternative Energy Kit. The "R" kits are the educational versions. They include a case, a student manual and a teacher's manual. The student manual discusses different electronic topics and will reference some of the projects for examples. The teacher's manual is a small quiz book. This kit is a nice introduction to electronics. It will not make you an electrical engineer. If you or your kids are curious about electronics, this is a good place to start. Many of the projects, however, are only slight variations of each other so don't expect 500 unique projects. It's also possible to follow all the project diagrams without giving it much thought and not learn much. You get out of it what you put into it. One of the first things you'll notice when you open the case is missing pieces. The missing pieces are part of the 750R kit and are not included with the 500R kit (marketing at its finest). We originally wanted the 750R kit but its current price is $183. So we bought the 500R kit instead and added the UC80 Upgrade Kit to make it equivalent to the 750R kit. Total price was $108.

When I started giving physical science demonstrations to schools, I built the necessary components to show how electricity is generated and used. Today the Snap Circuits product does that for you and does it very well. Each kit can be added-to, replacement parts are available and reasonably priced and safe for the ages intended.

About a month ago after having finished a program on magnetism and electricity for 4th graders, one of the students showed me the starter kit she just purchased. She was very excited about what the kit can build, I asked her what her career goal is and her reply was Electrical Engineer. Bravo! This IS what these kits are about, keeping the fire lit within and allowing students to fulfill their potential.

I purchased this toy for my 8 year old nephew, who's scientifically inclined. This was his favorite toy, and he was building a primitive AM radio within minutes. The big surprise was that 6 year old niece loved it as much and spent more time playing with it than she did with her own toys. The set comes nicely packaged in a black plastic carrying case with slots identifying the proper location for each of the parts. There's also a hefty instruction booklet with easy diagrams of all the projects that the children can copy and build with relative ease. I also purchased the optional adapter to free them up from the batteries, but I don't think it's totally necessary.

The only downside to this version is that it comes in the same case as a slightly larger version containing more pieces. Thus, when you purchase this version, there are a few empty slots in the carrying case which my observant nephew instantly spied and asked me why his version was "missing" pieces. I had to explain that those could be purchased separately, which I'm sure didn't thrill him.

He said repeatedly that this was his favorite toy.

My son-in-law got our granddaughter a smaller set about a year ago, and she loved it. I did, too. We had lots of fun doing the projects together, but it was obvious that she wanted to do more. So I order this much larger program.

I am glad that I read the reviews: I learned there were a few empty spaces in the case -nothing is missing but a child will notice them immediately.

Great educational tool; I'm learning as I go along, going through all the projects. Highly recommend for grandchildren as early as 6 years of age as long as there is an adult to work with them.
