I checked out a threading toy from the library that had like a shoe-lace type tip, and my 18 month old son had a hard time continuing to poke this little hard end all the way through the beads, but then I learned about this lacer and the extended wooden 'needle' allows him to continue to hold the bead and needle in one hand while his other hand slips the bead all the way on. Picked up on this concept within minutes. And bonus---he uses the beads as 'cargo' in his dump trucks.
