This ant farm was a lot of fun for my 6 year old. He was fascinated by the tunnels the ants made.The included light made the tunnels seem to glow in the dark when turned on so this could be used as a nightlight. I would however reccomend you buy the ants at the same time as the ant farm because this ships super fast. Do not try to catch the ants yourself because they will not be of adequate size to make the tunnels. The gel is too sticky for smaller varieties of ants. One thing I really liked is that it was not difficult for me to open but was too dificult to open for him so he could not release the ants all over the house. Overall a great toy and durable enough for preschoolers.

Ordered this for my six year old nephew for Christmas. He also got an ipodtouch, however; he said the ant farm was his best present. Awesome!

This is a very cool way to keep an ant farm apart from the traditional method of using sand and or dirt.

The item is very easy to put together. The instructions are straight forward. The booklet included with the TVQuarium comes with a list of places you can order the ants from (they dont come with the TVQuarium); only complaint is that this list is a bit outdated.

I ordered my ants through http://www.antsalive.com/antssupplies.htm which turned out to be the cheapest way $.95 for 25-30 ants with free shipping.

Definitely a cool item and a good way to peak children's interest to learn.

This was a Christmas gift for my three year old son, as he is starting to show an interest in nature and insects. I wanted him to have the opportunity to observe them safely and with no chance of any escapees! This ant farm was perfectthe ants are enclosed in their gel habitat, which is further enclosed in the black "TV" case. The black case is very child-proof. There are two locking tabs that are difficult for even an adult to open. There is a cord that plugs into the habitat (no need for batteries) and lights it from the bottom. Notethe ants do not come with the set, you will need to order them separately, there is a form in the kit. We live in FL and it took about two weeks for the ants to arrive. Once the ants arrived they immediately began to dig and tunnel. They are amazing little creatures to watch! Everyone in the family enjoys watching their progress and the changes to the habitat every day. My three year old checks the habitat several times a day to see what they've been up to. It's been a wonderful addition, and a very educational experience for us all. We're about three weeks in now, and the ants have tunneled through about 75% of the habitat. We've recently noticed that the colony's numbers are dwindling. (The ants actually take their dead and pile them together in one section of one of the tunnels.) Additionally, the ones that are still alive have slowed down quite a bit and don't seem interested in making any new tunnels. We've followed all the directions that came with the habitat, and also with the ants. It does say in the manual that their life expectancy is between 1-3 months, with 3 months being on the long side. All in all, it's exceeded our expectations.
